“In Hawai‘i, our ultimate goal is not to house the homeless – it’s to end homelessness,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Today marks the continued progress toward achieving that goal.”

Pai‘olu Kaiaulu, which means “lift of encouragement as the journey begins,” has served more than 650 homeless people and helped approximately 229 individuals transition into housing.

Lt. Governor Aiona said that the Pai‘olu Kaiaulu shelter is a direct result of the Administration’s commitment to providing homeless solutions.

“Hawai‘i’s transitional shelters have provided safe and secure shelter, as well as meals, to more than 2,000 homeless people in the past two years,” Lt. Governor Aiona told community members and homeless advocates gathered for the first anniversary celebration. “We are committed to continue providing more homeless solutions now and into the future.”

Lt. Governor Aiona noted that much of the progress made in opening emergency transitional shelters would not have been possible without the emergency declarations by the Governor and the collaborative partnership among the state, neighborhood boards, community associations and the military.

“As a result, we succeeded in accelerating the opening of several emergency shelters across the state,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “While there is more work ahead to address homelessness, it’s a battle we are committed to winning.”
