Arthritis Walk Draws Community Support

The Lt. Governor leads community supporters in the 2008 Arthritis Walk at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park in Kapolei.

Organized by the Hawai‘i branch of the Arthritis Foundation, the five-year-old event was part of a national effort to raise funds to assist with arthritis research and awareness.

Proceeds from the walk benefit the Juvenile Arthritis Camp, which is held every summer in Hawai‘i.

In Hawai‘i, it is estimated that more than 212,000 residents are affected by arthritis, the number one cause of work disability in the nation. That figure includes hundreds of children.

In the months leading up to the Saturday’s walk, Lt. Governor was featured in a public service announcement that drew attention to the plight of Hawai‘i children who are affected by arthritis.

And before taking part in the walk, Lt. Governor Aiona participated in a recognition dinner that the Arthritis Foundation held for its volunteers, whose goal was to raise as much as $100,000 for the cause.
