Ground Broken on East-West Road Project
The Lt. Governor joined with officials from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, state lawmakers and community leaders last week to break ground on a $17.3 million road project in Kapolei that is expected to dramatically improve the quality of life for area residents.
When it opens in approximately 18 months, the East-West Road will allow access to such future projects as the $110 million Kroc Community Center, a statewide headquarters for the Hawai‘i Special Olympics, two new schools and more than 2,400 new affordable homes.
The new road has been an important part in helping to open up more than $1 billion worth of construction work over the next five years. And it comes during a "critical time for the state’s future," Lt. Governor Aiona said at the ground-breaking ceremony.
By 2025, the population of West O‘ahu and Kapolei is projected to double from 85,000 to 172,000. During the same time, jobs are projected to almost triple to nearly 70,000.
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is planning more than 1,000 new
homes and the Hawai`i Housing Finance Development Corporation is
finalizing negotiations for the construction of more than 1,400 new
rentals.
“These projects should offer some encouragement as we work to successfully address the issues facing this fast-growing region,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “The East-West Road will pave the way for hope and opportunities for generations to come.”
