Lt. Governor Aiona recently rode his bike from Waipahu to Tamarind Park in downtown Honolulu as part of a national effort to promote cycling as an option for commuting to work.
The 14-mile commute for the Lt. Governor also helped show how commuters can not only incorporate regular exercise into a busy schedule, but reduce health risks such as heart disease as well traffic congestion and pollution.
The Lt. Governor was among hundreds of people who commuted by riding bikes to work on May 16 for National Bike to Work Day in Hawai‘i. More than 250 of them gathered before work at Tamarind Park in downtown Honolulu.
The Hawai‘i Bicycling League organized the event.
Lt. Governor Aiona has been leading a statewide effort to improve and maintain the health of Hawai`i residents. His emphasis has been on healthy diets and regular physical activity.
"To achieve goals of healthy living, we need to re-think how our individual behavior is influenced by the structure of our communities, workplaces and schools," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "We have to change the options available around us so that they support healthy behaviors."
