4-Day Work Week Pilot Project Expands

— filed under:

Last week, 269 state employees made the transition to a four-day work week in order to save money, energy and resources.

The Lt. Governor said that the pilot project has expanded to include employees at the Department of Health’s Kinau Hale Building in downtown Honolulu. They are now working four, 10-hour days instead to five, eight-hour days. The eight-week project ends Dec. 5, 2008.

Already, more than 100 employees at the state Department of Human Resources Development have been working a four-day work week since Aug. 4.  That pilot-project is scheduled to end Oct. 31.

“The expansion of our pilot project is about being able to better assess the benefits and challenges of a four-day work week,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Our Administration is constantly looking for innovative, outside-the-box solutions to improve government service and increase the quality of life for our residents.”

As part of the project, Department of Health hours at the Kinau Hale Building (1250 Punchbowl St.) will range from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The four-day work week is part of a broader effort by the Lingle-Aiona Administration to increase energy efficiency, improve customer service and provide workers with more flexibility while maintaining the same level of service to the public.
