Providing Congestion Relief for West Maui
Lt. Governor Aiona and State Department of Transportation officials today broke ground on the Honoapi`ilani Highway Widening Project from the Lahainaluna Road to Aholo Road.
Lt. Governor Aiona joins other public officials in celebrating the Honoapi`ilani Highway widening project.
The one-mile section will be widened from two lanes to four lanes, with landscaped medians, pedestrian and bike lanes and intersection upgrades.
"The Honoapi`ilani Highway Widening project, coupled with the construction of the Lahaina Bypass, will bring immediate congestion relief to the community," said the Lt. Governor. "This project will provide the capacity to service West Maui well into the future."
The Honoapi`ilani Highway serves as the current gateway into Lahaina town. Nearly 26,000 vehicles travel this route everyday, which is currently the only access route available to parts of the island north of Lahaina.
When the project is completed, residents on the makai side of the highway will be able to enjoy walking along a new sidewalk and crossing the highway through an improved Shaw Street signalized intersection. Paved shoulders on both sides of the highway will also improve access for the many bicyclists who travel this route.
