For Immediate Release: June 26, 2008

HONOLULU – Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. presided over a swearing-in ceremony today for West Hawai‘i residents appointed to serve on various state boards and commissions. The Honorable Ronald Ibarra, chief judge of the Third Circuit Court, administered the official oath of office to the new members.

This year Governor Linda Lingle appointed 29 individuals from the West Hawai‘i area to serve on 17 different state boards and commissions, including the Advisory Board on Veterans Services, Board of Pharmacy, Correctional Industries Advisory Committee, Environmental Council, Family Celebration Commission, Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation Board of Directors and West Hawai‘i Regional Board, Health Planning Council, Island Burial Council, Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission and the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents.  The list of new appointees from West Hawai‘i is attached.

“These public servants have shown strong leadership and character in choosing the path of public service,” said Lt. Governor Aiona. “West Hawai‘i residents who volunteer their time and expertise to serve on boards and commissions are providing valuable public service that is making our government more responsive and enhancing the quality of life in Hawai‘i.”

Nearly 1,300 people statewide serve on more than 160 boards and commissions that were established by the state constitution, state statutes, or executive orders.  This year’s appointees include 457 people from around the state to serve on boards that cover a wide range of industries and issues.  On June 12th, 36 East Hawai‘i board and commission members were sworn in.
