STATE FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY
For immediate release: May 13, 2009
HONOLULU – In honor of Hawai‘i’s law enforcement officers who lost their lives protecting the people of Hawai‘i, Governor Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at state and county buildings to be flown at half-staff on Friday, May 15, 2009, which will be observed as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” in Hawai‘i and across the nation.
The Governor’s order is in conjunction with President Barack Obama’s order that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on this day to honor our nation’s law enforcement officers.
“The first responsibility of government is to protect the lives of its citizens,” said Governor Lingle. “The men and women who serve in Hawai‘i’s law enforcement are among our first responders who put their lives in danger in order to ensure the safety and well being of others. We honor the service and the sacrifice of the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and we are eternally grateful for their commitment to watch over our communities.”
“On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect our families and our communities from danger,” said Lt. Governor Aiona. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of our fallen law enforcement officers.”
Governor Lingle and Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. also declared May 11 through 17, 2009, as “Police Week” in Hawai‘i.
