Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz meets with Chinese Delegation from Guangdong Province

For Immediate Release: August 2, 2011

Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz met with a delegation from Guangdong Province of China, led by Vice Governor Xiao Zhiheng. Guangdong Province, located in southern China, has a population of 104 million residents and is the part of China from which many of Hawaii's Chinese families originally emigrated.

The Vice Governor and the Lieutenant Governor had a wide-ranging discussion that focused on clean energy partnerships, tourism promotion, and the development of a social safety net in China. Schatz said, "This is our second meeting, and we are developing a solid working relationship. We see a number of areas to collaborate upon, especially in tourism and clean energy."

Schatz gave the Vice Governor a Hawaii-made aloha shirt in honor of his visit to the islands, and they agreed to continue discussions. The Guangdong government intends to send a delegation to the Abercrombie administration's Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit, to be held in Honolulu in September. Further discussions regarding the possibility of adding a direct flight from Guangzhou to Honolulu will occur over the next several months.

The Lieutenant Governor recently returned from a trip to China that included visits to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
