Hawaii Commission for National and Community Service

Overview 

The Recovery Act funds that the Commission received from the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) falls in line with Hawaii’s priority use by creating jobs and helping promote economic recovery.  Although the “AmeriCorps members” (as they are known by CNCS) are not considered employees, they do receive a living allowance (stipend) and pay taxes, which helps our economy.

The ARRA funds that we received were considered “special ” ARRA funds and the amount and the objectives were determined by CNCS and not the Commission.  Therefore, the use of ARRA funds, are specific to the CNCS goals and objectives and as a result, are spent according to federal guidelines established by CNCS.

The Hawaii Commission received more than its fair share of the “special” ARRA funds since we were the only “small state” (based on population), to receive over a million dollars of the ARRA funds made available by CNCS. On that premise, we were very successful in the competition of ARRA funds made available to all states.

The CNCS has their own specific rules and regulations regarding the use of and reporting of ARRA funds.  The reports that are submitted are reviewed by CNCS and we are up to date on all federal reporting requirements.
