Statement from HSFCA Commissioners
on Support for the Arts in Hawai‘i
The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts commissioners are fully committed to continuing our legislatively mandated responsibilities. HSFCA programs supporting culture and the arts touch every island and many communities, including thousands of individuals. Our programs contribute an essential arts aspect to the education of our children.
The HSFCA commissioners are monitoring the situation and remain hopeful that the budget crisis can be resolved without extensive layoffs. We also appreicate that every State agency and all employees are facing considerable uncertainty and difficult decisions.
First and foremost, we are focusing on the important work that must continue whatever the outcome of negotiations and arbitration. We are very grateful to the foundation staff who remain dedicated and continue working hard even in these difficult times. We also appreciate the arts and culture organizations, individuals, and community groups which have spoken out recently about the importance of support for the arts.
