Exhibitions

THRU JAN. 16, 2010. "Accession ’09" A continuation of the exhibition, “Accession: Recent Acquisitions from the Art in Public Places Collection,” that highlights recent purchases, commissions, and gifts that demonstrate the exceptional work collected by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Art in Public Places Collection. This exhibit is temporary closed in order to prepare for the new hula exhibition, "Ho‘oulu: The Inspiration of Hula." The gallery will reopen on Sept. 4, and the exhibition will then run through Jan. 16, 2010. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum, 250 Hotel St. Hours: Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and First Friday, the downtown gallery walk held on the first Friday of every month, from 5-9 p.m. Closed Sunday, Monday, and all state and federal holidays. THRU JULY 17, 2010. "Ho‘oulu: The Inspiration of Hula" An exhibit honoring the art of hula, featuring work from the Art in Public Places Collection, along with hula implements and objects from the Bishop Museum and the Hula Preservation Society. The exhibition will run through July 17, 2010. "Where We Live: Places of Hawai‘i" A new exhibition showcasing art which reflects the unique environment and striking landscapes of Hawai‘i. The art includes both realistic and abstract images of the many tranquil, dynamic, and vibrant settings found throughout the islands. The exhibit features work from the Art in Public Places Collection. "He Alo A He Alo: Face to Face, Visions & Portraits of Hawai‘i," an exhibit of visionary artwork and portraits from the Art in Public Places Collection. The themes of the exhibit include Hawaiian heritage, Asian roots, social consciousness, and cultural traditions. I Love Art Gallery is a new interactive educational gallery that promotes the understanding and appreciation of the arts, and encourages the public to increase their own awareness of the place and significance of art in their own lives. The gallery is designed to learn about art as artists do – by touching, observing, exploring, thinking, and reading, and is modified for each new exhibition. First Friday Downtown Gallery Walk is scheduled Nov. 6, from 5-9 p.m. Downtown museums and galleries, including the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, open their doors for an evening featuring exhibitions, artist demonstrations, and performances. HiSAM is also hosting, "Live from the Lawn," a free live performance scheduled from 6-9 p.m. This month features "World Beat," with music from Japan (Taiko Center of the Pacific), Africa (drummer Sango), Middle East (Tamr Hennas), Caribbean (Greg and Junko on steel drums), and Pacific Exotica (Don Tiki). Downtown @ the HiSAM, the restaurant located on the first floor of the museum, will be open. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum, 250 Hotel St. Admission is free. For more information, call 586-0900.

Second Saturday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum: Get Your Drama On! and An Illustrator’s Photoshop. A free family event featuring hands-on learning activities and quick tours of the museum. This month’s activities include acting and drama techniques with Drama Crew instructor Michael Cowell and tips on digital photography with instructor Jillian Lund. Scheduled Nov. 14, art galleries open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with art activities scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Downtown @ the HiSAM, the restaurant located on the first floor of the museum, will be also be open. Art Lunch Lecture: "Nau Ka Wae: The Choice Belongs to You." A free lecture by artist Kaili Chun. This event is part of both the HSFCA Awards Recipient Series and the 25th Anniversary of HSFCA Folks Arts Apprenticeship Program. Scheduled Nov. 24, from 12 noon-1 p.m. The Art Lunch Lecture Series is presented by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, on the last Tuesday of the month.
