PURPOSE
he Arts-In-Education (AIE) Program encourages and promotes the integration of the arts as part of a students basic education, from pre-school through high school, in higher education to include college, and thereafter, as part of an individual's life-long learning experience.
PROGRAM SERVICES
The AIE Program collaborates with government entities such as the state Department of Education, and community arts organizations, such as the Hawai‘i Alliance for Arts Education, to support a wide array of arts education activities and services throughout the state. These include: encouraging local cultural institutions to invest more in educational programming; providing a central resource for information, research findings and expertise; initiating and assisting the development of partnerships among arts organizations, businesses and schools to achieve a comprehensive arts education program in the public schools; training artists to work with teachers and students in support of state curriculum goals; training teachers to integrate the arts in other core disciplines; distributing instructional arts education materials; publishing arts curriculum development guides; and facilitating arts-in-education advocacy campaigns.

SFCA ARTS PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS
The State Foundation on Culture – Arts in Education Program supports many programs that are available to assist classroom teachers and artist educators, especially those at elementary schools, with the implementation of the Hawai‘i Fine Arts Standards. Within the next few weeks, school principals will be receiving packets of information about each of these programs:
Artists in the Schools funds are available for schools to engage artists for performances, lecture-demonstrations, classes, workshops and short-term residencies. Andres Libed, DOE AITS Coordinator, (808) 394-1353. DOE proposal deadline is Friday, October 20, 2000.
Art in Public Places – Artists in Residence was established to provide an extended artist residency in the visual arts while creating a commissioned work of art for selected schools, approximately seven each year. Arts in Education Curriculum Development Initiative Grant guidelines and application forms have been distributed to all public elementary schools and non-profit arts organizations. Maximum grants are $5,000 and minimum is $1,000. Contact Elaine Zinn, (808) 586-0768. SFCA application deadline is Friday, September 22, 2000. These grants are for nonprofit arts organizations in partnership with public elementary schools. These grants are to develop standards-based, sequentially-organized arts instruction in Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts to be taught in Hawai‘i’s public elementary schools and to promote community-based arts education partnerships. Previous grant projects have developed with an artist working in close consultation with a school and have encompassed a wide range of art forms. The grants are up to $5,000 to be matched with 1:1 non-federal funds.
School Arts Excellence Awards are presented annually at the Hawai‘i Alliance for Arts Education gala awards event at the Hawai‘i Theatre. SFCA supports the award in 2001 with $3,000 to each of three public secondary schools. Guidelines and proposals will be distributed by the Hawai‘i Alliance for Arts Education, (808) 941-2787 in September with a tentative deadline of November 17, 2000.
Elementary Student Art Exhibit – at the Hawai‘i Convention Center provides the opportunity for 96 elementary students K-6 to have their artwork, based on the theme “My Island and Me,” showcased at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. Dedication of the new artwork will be Sunday, May 20. Guidelines will be distributed by Dorothy Oshiro, DOE Liaison, Honolulu Academy of Arts, in early September. Selection process will begin in mid – February 2001.
Arts Workshops to provide in-service training for Elementary Teachers in drama and literary arts will be offered on Oahu between January and April 2001 by experienced artist educators affiliated with the Maui Arts & Culture Center – Arts Education Program. Announcements and registration information will be distributed to schools later this fall by the SFCA.
