Calendar for O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, and Maui
Honolulu Printmakers 82nd Annual Exhibition Call for Entries. A juried exhibition open to works in all hand printmaking media, including lithographs, screenprints, relief, intaglio, monoprints, letterpress, artists' books, and any work on paper which includes at least one of the previously stated hand printing techniques as a significant element in its execution. Electronic and digital print media may also be used in combination with hand printmaking. This year's juror is artist Helen Frederick. Exhibition scheduled Feb. 25-March 19. Entry drop-off: FEB. 19, from 2-6 p.m., at the Academy Art Center at Linekona, 1111 Victoria St. For neighbor islands, entry deadline: FEB. 17; must include prepaid return postage. First Friday Downtown Gallery Walk is scheduled Feb. 5, from 5-9 p.m. Downtown museums and galleries, including the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, open their doors for an evening featuring exhibitions, artist demonstrations, and performances. The "47th Annual Hawai‘i Regional Scholastic Art Awards 2010" exhibition will open during the event. HiSAM is also hosting, "Live from the Lawn," a free live performance scheduled from 6-9 p.m. This month features "Roots and Rhythm," a celebration of Black History Month, with a performance by up-and-coming rapper Yung Tunez, and musical performances by the ‘Iolani School Tam-Young Jazz Combo, the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church Gospel Choir, blues guitarist Rico Woltz, and Na Hoku Hanohano award winners, A Touch of Gold. On the second floor Lanai Lounge, Rumba Negro will present a North and West African rooted, Spanish and Latin American spiced rumba. Downtown @ the HiSAM, the restaurant located on the first floor of the museum, will be open for dinner from 5:30-9 p.m. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum, 250 Hotel St. Admission is free. Second Saturday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum: "Hearts in Blooming Color." A free family event featuring hands-on learning activities and quick tours of the museum. Join the Hawai‘i Watercolor Society for arts demonstrations and hands-on art activities. Create a watercolor Valentine and explore mixed media art using oil pastels and watercolors. Edwin Cheung will also be on hand to demonstrate how to use dried flowers as the source material in making beautiful compositions and show how to make an Oshibana card. Scheduled Feb. 13, art galleries open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with art activities scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Downtown @ the HiSAM, the restaurant and gift shop located on the first floor of the museum, will be also be open. Art Lunch Lecture: "Hawaiian Cowboy: A Cultural Gift to Hawai‘i." A free lecture by renowned saddle-maker Albert Moniz, who will discuss the history of the Hawaiian cowboy. FEB. 5-APRIL 2. "47th Annual Hawai‘i Regional Scholastic Art Awards 2010" An exhibition of the most outstanding art work from hundreds of Hawai‘i students, in grades 7-12, throughout the islands. The exhibit features the regional Scholastic Art Gold Key Awards and Silver Key Awards finalists from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Program, the longest running and most prestigious student arts recognition program in the United States. Of these finalists, five are nominated for the American Vision Award, the highest honor in the national competition. All Gold Key Awarded artworks go on to represent the Hawai‘i region in the national judging held each April in New York City. THRU MAY 2010. "2009 Student Art Exhibition" A statewide juried exhibit of art works created by students in grades K-6. The exhibition was established by the HSFCA to recognize and display student work. Students were invited to submit work on the theme, “Celebrating Hawai‘i with My Family and Friends,” and express how they feel, see, or interpret their lifestyle in the islands. Free docent-guided tours are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. for groups of 10 or more. Tours are conducted by appointment only. I Love Art Gallery is a new interactive educational gallery that promotes the understanding and appreciation of the arts, and encourages the public to increase their own awareness of the place and significance of art in their own lives. ‘Aha Hana Lima 2010 Workshops (A Gathering of the Crafts), an annual event sponsored by the Hawaii Craftsman. Three-day workshops are offered in Ceramics, Glass, and Wood. This year’s workshops are as follows: "Electric Firing: What’s all the fuss about reduction, anyway?" with Steven Hill; "Glass Casting" with Kathy McClelland Cowan; and "Wood Carving" with Mike Lee. "Nuno Felting & Dyeing Workshop" A workshop with textile artist Melissa Arnold. The workshop will cover how to merge wool fibers into fabric. "The Art of Learning" is a program, sponsored by the Society for South Kona's Education and Arts, that takes the arts to public schools in South Kona. The program brings teaching artists to the classroom to assist with either new lesson plans or to augment regular class curriculum. SKEA matches teachers and artists, assists with curriculum integration, funds the artist's classroom time and any specialized materials needed.
