Commemorating the day in 1959 that the U.S. Congress passed the bill which allowed Hawai'i to be admitted as a state, the Commission hosted a public event at the State Capitol. A special joint session of the Hawai'i State Legislature featured several of Hawai'i's music legends as well as those who will lead the industry for the next 50 years. In the Capitol Rotunda, residents and visitors viewed historic artifacts from 1959 and enjoyed a performance by the Hawai'i National Guard Band.
The 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission believes that highlighting Hawai'i's rich host culture and history will provide a continued emphasis on community education. As part of the education of our residents and visitors, a Walking Tour of 50 Years is available, providing an in depth look at the incredible history found in Hawai'i's downtown capital cultural district. Tours include 'Iolani Palace, the State Capitol, Washington Place, the Hawai'i State Art Museum and many other historic locations. Maps featuring the history of these locations and local businesses are available for the tours at various locations, including the State Capitol and 'Iolani Palace.
