The Department of Taxation's 2009 Year End Workshops will begin on
Kaua'i on Monday, November 23. Workshops on Maui and O'ahu, and in Kona
and Hilo, will be held within the following weeks:

Executive Furlough Days Treated as State Holidays
On November 3, 2009, Governor Linda Lingle signed Executive Order No. 09-10, which ordered "that for all purposes under any statute of limitations or repose, administrative rules, and rules of practice and procedure involving executive branch administrative agencies, should a deadline or due date occur on a day for which an agency's office is closed because of furlough, such day shall be treated as a Saturday, Sunday or State holiday."

Conformity to Internal Revenue Service Notice 2004-54, Relating to Alternative Methods of Signatures for Paid Tax Return Preparers
The Department of Taxation (Department) announces that it will conform to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 2004-54, which authorizes paid tax return preparers to sign tax returns by means other than by hand.

The Department has issued its eighth letter ruling under TIR 2009-01. The letter ruling discusses the Department's increase in the cap amount of investments that may rely upon conclusions set forth in a prior comfort ruling.

The Department has issued its seventh letter ruling under TIR 2009-01. The letter ruling is in regards to Hawaii income tax withholding obligations for crew members working on research vessels.

HONOLULU - Josephine Q. Lopez, who was indicted by an Oahu Grand Jury
on March 27, 2008, was charged with two Class C Felony counts of
attempting to evade or defeat tax and two misdemeanor counts of
willfully failing to file her individual income tax returns for 2004
and 2005.
